Lighted Airbag Color Change R&D

Over the years, I have had quite a few requests to change the color of the steering wheel SRT airbag lights.

Recently, someone bought one and sent it in, for me to see if I could change the color to orange.

Here is what I have found, so far:

There is a flexible pcb, on the inside of the airbag cover:

Not sure if there are LEDs, on the other side... or if this is an EL sheet. It is populated with a number of resistors and diodes, so there may be smd LEDs, there.

As soon as I remove the pcb, from the cover, I'll investigate and post my findings.

Okay... got it torn apart:

To change the color of a white SRT airbag logo, one would need to insert a gel sheet between the EL sheet and the back of the SRT logo.

This way, when the lights turn on, they would go through the gel sheet and resonate whatever color you like.

It can be done... hell of a lot of work, though.

Here is is, with a yellowish sheet, behind it:

After sleeping on it, I would recommend buying the lighted airbag cover and modding it. This way, the only downtime would be swapping the modded cover (about 2 hours, with r&r).

I know we're largely a power community, here, but I thought I'd share my findings, just the same
