Dodge Horsepower Challenge

Has anyone seen an actual winner announced yet? Other than Goldberg saying a winner has been selected at the beginning of the video that gives the answer to Week 1.

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but Dodge screwed up how the hashtags reduced the answers for the first week. It went something like 80 to 60, 60 to 40, 40 to 30, 30 to 15 for me, and then the fifth hashtag wouldn’t work.

P.S. All I want for Christmas is a new Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye and a Red Ryder BB gun! I swear I won’t shoot my eye out, but I may make an attempt at breaking the sound barrier. 😬

All things considered here... FCA is the only manufacturer doing so much to promote their horsepower brand products.

I don't recall any other manufacturer giving away their premier product and in such a positive way. First, Horsepower Bucks and now this Horsepower Challenge.

I guess I have to tip my hat to FCA, all difficulties encountered aside.

Just say it was top speed the whole distance.
12.42miles/203mph=0.07hours=4.2min=4min12sec
so the answer had to be more than 4min12 sec
so 19sec left is all that accounted for the slope and the acceleration over 12.42 miles???

You don't need the slope if you have the rate of acceleration. That's already been solved for you.

so the answer had to be more than 4min12 sec
so 19sec left is all that accounted for the slope and the acceleration over 12.42 miles???

First, you had to calculate the time and distance required to get from 0 to 203. Then that distance was used to calculate the remaining distance.

With the remaining distance, you can calculate the time needed to travel over that remaining distance at the 203 top speed reached.

There are actually two ways to calculate the total time needed to travel the 12.42 miles. One was presented on Goldberg's chalkboard. The other (which I used) was a bit simpler IMO...

I believe the slope was tossed in to complicate things and mislead. It was not needed to determine the answer. Kinda shifty on FCAs part.

Ok that makes way more sense. I used my shitty work calculator that rounded .0611 up to .07

Hey how do you think I feel? I calculated 4:31, didn't see it and picked 4:55 thinking I must have made a minor mistake, then recalculating it trying to add in gravity over thinking it since their acceleration already had that included....I figured that when I calculated a 0 - 60 time with their acceleration and it was way slower......I never saw the 3:91 those sneaky bastards....but a friend of mine saw the 3:91 when when I asked him if I missed the 4:31 and he definitely picked that answer.....soooo I hope that at least he wins a car even if I can't! lol

For the rest of the challenges I am not screwing around....waiting for all 5 hashtag reductions down to 10 choices before submitting....

that's exactly what they did, but it also makes the contest more fun and improves odds to those can get in their heads of what answer THEY decide is right, not necessarily one that we might agree with. the problem was pure kinematics, but they threw in some (but not all) of the variables needed for a more realistic analysis, i.e., rigid-body or kinetics analysis.

my main gripe was that one should not have to assume the programming of the game might be screwed up! that pissed me off to no end, because I nearly trusted that all the answer sets at various levels of being hashed down HAD to contain the right answer, and almost didn't enter what I knew was the correct physics-based answer.

The email that I got from Dodge says that they are adding a 6th car to the equation. The people who put 4:16 will have a drawing for a car, as well as the people who put the "real" correct answer will have a drawing for a car. So, no one is getting left out.

"Thanks again for participating in the Horsepower Challenge. Due to a system error, participants who responded to Question 1 with the answer “4:16 minutes.” were notified that this was the correct answer. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
However, to remedy this, we will be doing a drawing from among all eligible entries who were notified “4:16” was the correct answer AND we are adding a sixth car so you still have a chance to WIN your very own Special Edition 2019 Challenger Hellcat Redeye.

Thank you for understanding and we wish you the best of luck."

yep, they definitely did the right thing to deal with the programming errors and salvage the contest by adding another car and drawing, but you would cry if I told you how many hours I wasted last week thinking my work was incorrect - I was about ready to surrender my engineering degree and PE licenses
