Thinking of buying a universal diagnostic trouble code / scanner set up. Anyone have experience with ones they would recommend?

As always, thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Aren’t you planning to sell the car?

It's still up for sale. Have had a few nibbles, but nothing that ended up in the done deal column. We'll see how it goes.

The search for the scan tool has nothing to do with the sale or the Red Eye. That fleet of Expeditions I have could use the tool to save me time when we have something weird going on.

This is what i use. It even reads the messages, on my KTM motorcycle (with adapter cable). One of the best scanners I have used and serves a myriad of vehicle makes. Also, is very good at finding hidden codes (those that are stored, but do not set a light).

Highly recommended. Plus, it works well with AlfaOBD.

Alfa is far superior than HP tuners for codes, you can only view pcm/tcm codes there and some communication issues. Alfa will tell you which module is throwing the code (although you have to scan each one individually). Depends on how familiar you are with scan tools, Alfa isn’t very intuitive and you can mess things up if you’re not careful

True.

Looking won't hurt anything.

Car Configuration Changes might.
