Nitto 555R2 question

Been looking at 555R2s for the rear (ran the 555 originals back in the day but never these, running Mickey Thompson's instead). Looking at the 555 line up, is see two 305 tires.

305/35R20 107W XL 108580 10.0-(11.0)-12.0
305/50R20 116V 108820 8.5-(9.5)-11.0

The 580 is around the size of the stock tires, but still looks at ~ 11 inch wide wheel and is W rated.
The 820 is nearly 3.5 inches taller than the stock, but can take a 9.5 wheel, with only a V rating (149).

Any of you who are more familiar with Nittos now than I am care to explain the differing use cases for these, since they are allegedly the same model of tire? Seems to me if you could legitimately run 305 on 9.5 wheel that would be pretty sweet. But don't you risk wobble on those rears with that much shoulder on that narrow a wheel (so best for straight line only)?

I have run the 305 Nitto’s on the stock 9.5” wheel but they do bulge some. Ended up using 10.5” wide Voxx replica wheels & they fit perfect.

I believe I have those 10.5" Voxx's too, they are only like $150 per wheel so kind of a no-brainer. I got them from Discount Tire.

305/50 is way too tall. Buy a 10.5-11" wheel and run 305/35 or 315/35

...and if you are going to do a 305/35 you could also run a high-end street tire like the Michelin PS4S or the summer Continentals, those are about the only two I would consider.

I use 275/40R20 R2's on a std body redeye, 28.66 tall and they look ok and do ok and I keep a forged stock wheel. Better traction than stock by far. I can leave pretty good from a higher roll depending on the surface and air temp. . 9.0 to 11.0 wheel spec.. Well actually I am not exactly sure what model 555 they are but I suspect R2s, Someone gave them to me and I cant get at the car to look for sure at the moment. I know they are not street G2s, those are pretty much useless for traction.

I know someone who can get the PS4S’s to hook pretty good on the streets. You do not need to worry about driving in the wet either.

The 555R2s I ran on my car daily and track. They were decent on the street but would hop or spin on the track. Went with MT and no more issues. I wasted a good amount of time trying to get the nittos to work. The original 555r were night and day better. You would be better off with the PS4S’s

Are you planning to take it to the track @Magnified or just want wider tires for looks? If you are not worried about mileage, and the Nitto’s are not high mileage tires either, the Michelins are the way to go and worth the price.

And when you want to play, I’d just keep an eye out for a used set of bravados with 305/45r18 ET Street R’s on the various sites and Facebook marketplace, I see them all the time for like $500 with 50% tire life. Good on any dry day! All you need is new lug nuts to put them on.

Run these, did my best street 60-130 on them after running Nitto’s for years. They last 3x as long too. Beat the Nitto’s by 1/2 second.

I sold mine with brand new MTs on them and now I kinda regret it.

Mag my street set is the 305/35/20 555r2 on 10.5s and 275/40/20 555g2 on 9.5 fronts. I do like them (a lot), but I may go with conti next for street like @16GoManGoHC2 ^^^^

Thanks for the reply. The loose wheel is the replica 11 inch? Which Nitto is that? The 35R20 or the 50R20 (looks like the 35 to me)?

For some reason I can't get the multi-quote system to work. Yes, those are incredibly tall, that's why I was asking if anyone knew why they made a version so tall? I can't see the purpose (but maybe I'm not smart enough - I'm just a dumb country boy from west texas)

I had PS4S before on the Charger HC, okay but had some strange handling characteristics (at least my set). There is a sizeable thread on here. For daily driving, I would go with them without a thought. I ended up running through several sets of M/T ET Street SS and loved them for the street grip launch on the asphalt we have here (west texas high - temp). For this Red Eye I am trying to decide between 555R2s and ET Street SS.

Like the previous Charger HC I am too far from the track with too many other commitments to probably ever get there (nearest 80-90 miles one way). So, like the Charger, I usually end up do street "racing" or local racing on old (or currently in use) runways. Sometimes rolling out the timing gear. So, in the end, I think I'm going to probably be into a set of 11" wheels and the M/Ts again.
